Mildura - Albury via the Sturt and Murray Valley
Highways. (Hwys 20 & 16)
Total distance 622km
All distances measured from Mildura
Leaving Mildura on the Sturt Highway (Hwy 20) we follow the River Murray through
grape and citrus country down to Robinvale (82km) where we join the Murray Valley
Highway (Hwy 16) for the remainder of our journey.
The Mallee Highway (Hwy 12) from Adelaide crosses our route at the little township
of Piangil (174km) and we then pass through Nyah West to reach the thriving border
city of Swan Hill (219km). There is plenty here to interest the traveller - shops,
hotels and restaurants are plentiful and there is an excellent historical village
complete with an old paddle-wheeler that used to ply the Murray.
Not far from Swan Hill we come to Lake Boga home of Bestís Winery and the place where
flying boats were serviced during WW1. A park near the lake complete with a Catalina
flying boat and museum is an interesting place to spend a little time.
Another of the Victorian towns close to the NSW border is Kerang (269km) and this
is soon followed by Cohuna (295km) on the way to Echuca (358km)and its NSW partner
Moama. The waterfront here has been restored and paddle-wheelers still ply the waters
of the mighty River Murray as they did in past eras when the river was the main means
of transport for vast areas of the country.
More river towns await us as we continue eastwards with Nathalia, Cobram, and Yarrawonga
all on our route before we reach our destination - the large regional centre of Albury/Wodonga
(454km) the twin cities that straddle the Murray.
