Nyngan - Charleville via the Mitchell Highway
(Hwy 71).
Total distance 606km
All distances measured from Nyngan
This section is just a link between the road
coming from Port Augusta to Sydney via the Barrier and Mitchell Highways and the
one from Brisbane - Barcaldine via Warrego Highway and Landsborough Highways.
You can truthfully say youíve been ëBack oí Bourkeí after doing this section as Bourke
(204km) is the first major town you come to as you travel northwards on the Mitchell
Highway (Hwy 71). No longer the major river port it was in its heyday, the outback
town is still a major regional centre for the properties in the surrounding district.
Cunnamulla (461km) is the only other town of any size on this link and it is the
centre for the districtís sheep and cattle industry.
Another 146km brings us to Charleville (606km) and our junction with the Warrago
Highway (Hwy 54). The town has historical links with Qantas which had its first commercial
flight, to Cloncurry, from there in 1922.
